July 29: When nuclear fear came wrapped as a peace offer

On July 29, 1957, the International Atomic Energy Agency was established. Tonight's film: Miracle Mile (1989).

I still remember what it felt like to be afraid of nuclear war. Not from my own skin, but from the way adults whispered, weighing what little of the Chernobyl cloud had drifted our way in the garden. To me the atom was always the thing too big for a person to understand.
