July 25: Frequency (2000)
On July 25, 1837, the first commercial electric telegraph was demonstrated in London. Tonight's film: Frequency (2000).
A couple of evenings ago I dug an old transceiver out of the back of a cupboard. Nothing fancy, just a cheap plastic box I picked up years ago when I used to listen to shortwave at night. I screwed the antenna back on, turned the dial through the static, and waited for a human voice to climb out of the noise. It never came. These days the phone in my pocket holds half the world, and still I miss that moment when a stranger arrives out of thin air. It came back to me when I learned that on July 25, 1837, the first commercial electric telegraph was demonstrated in London.
