July 19: The stepford smile
On July 19, 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention opened as the first US women's rights convention. Tonight's film: The Stepford Wives (1975).
This morning I looked at the calendar and stopped for a second. July 19, 1848. A small town in upstate New York, Seneca Falls. A Wesleyan chapel. About 300 people, two days, and a printed document that copied the Declaration of Independence almost word for word, except it wrote “all men and women” where the original said “all men.” That was the Declaration of Sentiments.
